TMB Group signed a 40-million-euro contract to build a packaging materials factory in Sweden

11.01.2017

Betonimestarit Oy, a member of AS TMB – a large Estonian group focused on production of concrete elements, has signed a contract worth 40 million euros with a Swedish industrial group BillerudKorsnäs AB for supply of concrete elements for the construction of a new packaging materials factory in Gruvön.

According to this contract – the largest in the history of TMB Group – TMB plants in Estonia and Finland will produce and deliver more than 80 000 tons of concrete elements to be assembled on site. Ca. 8 months are planned for installation. Production of the elements begins in February of this year.

“This is a rather unusual project, since large concrete elements weighing over 60 tons will be used during the construction. Those will be produced at Iisalmi plant in Finland,” describes Jaan Luts, member of the management board of AS TMB. “Tartu, Nastola, Turku and Haapavesi plants are also involved in the project”.

The next generation packaging materials factory is one of the largest investment projects in Sweden in recent years. The total investment amounts to 5.7 billion SEK, i.e. ca. 600 million euros. Approximately 40 million will be spent on production and installation of concrete elements. According to Luts, this ambitious project will enable the company to establish itself as a serious player in the market of Nordic countries.

“It is important that we have been entrusted by such a large international group. Until now on export markets we mostly worked in the field of housing construction,” says Luts. “The Swedish factory project is ca. 30% of our total budget this year. This is an excellent opportunity to raise reputation in working on large-scale projects”.

Concrete elements will be delivered to the construction site in Gruvön both by sea and by road. “From Estonia concrete elements are transported by sea, since port of Karlstad is located fairly close to the construction site. The Finnish company will also use rail transport. The biggest elements are transported one by one on road vehicles,” adds Luts.

BillerudKorsnäs is one of the largest manufacturers of packaging materials in Sweden and internationally. The new factory is to be commissioned in early 2019. Its annual capacity will be 550,000 tons of packaging material.

AS TMB is the company engaged in the production, sale and installation of concrete elements. Its subsidiaries are: OÜ TMB Element (in Estonia), SIA TMB Elements (in Latvia), Bygg Element Sverige AB (in Sweden) and Betonimestarit OY (in Finland).
